Awards Season 2022-23: Awards Round-Up 1/8

Looking for a few awards in a world of banshees and butt plugs.

Putting this up Sunday because this week and next week will be pretty packed. All the guilds and the BAFTAs will announce their nominees by the 19th, and the Oscar nominations are just five days later. So get ready for that Greatest Beer Run surge. You know it’s coming.

Anyway, got a motley bunch of awards groups to talk about today:

Picture:

  • AWFJ: The Banshees of Inisherin
  • CACF: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • DFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • GWNYFCA: The Banshees of Inisherin
  • NCFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NSFC: Tár
  • OFCC: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • SDFCS: The Banshees of Inisherin
  • UFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once

Banshees makes itself felt, and Tár scores a pretty major win (the NSFC is easily the most prestigious of these groups), but Everything Everywhere continues to rake in the wins. It’s always dangerous to be a frontrunner – but here we are.

Director:

  • AWFJ: Sarah Polley, Women Talking
  • CACF: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • DFCA: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • GWNYFCA: Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • NCFCA: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NSFC: Charlotte Wells, Aftersun
  • OFCC: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • SDFCS: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • UFCA: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once

Likewise, the Daniels are doing awfully well – the three groups that didn’t go for them went for three different directors. Nice to see Wells win a major award, as that film was beautifully directed, but I fear the Oscars will pass her over.

Actor:

  • AWFJ: Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • CACF: Brendan Fraser, The Whale
  • DFCA: Brendan Fraser, The Whale
  • GWNYFCA: Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • NCFCA: Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • NSFC: Colin Farrell, After Yang and The Banshees of Inisherin
  • OFCC: Brendan Fraser, The Whale
  • SDFCS: Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • UFCA: Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin

Still the Farrell/Fraser show, as it probably will be right up until the end of the season. Farrell does seem to be slightly ahead – but we haven’t even heard from SAG yet.

Actress:

  • AWFJ: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • CACF: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • DFCA: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • GWNYFCA: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NCFCA: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NSFC: Cate Blanchett, Tár
  • OFCC: Cate Blanchett, Tár
  • SDFCS: Danielle Deadwyler, Till
  • UFCA: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once

And here it’s Blanchett vs. Yeoh, though Danielle Deadwyler makes an appearance as well (which is great). Yeoh is ahead on raw numbers, but Blanchett winning the NSFC is pretty significant. This one may come down to the wire.

Supporting Actor:

  • AWFJ: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • CACF: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • DFCA: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • GWNYFCA: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NCFCA: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NSFC: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • OFCC: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • SDFCS: Brendan Gleeson, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • UFCA: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once

On the other hand, Quan wins damn near everything here – even the NSFC, who didn’t embrace that film like most of the other groups did. Brendan Gleeson will get nominated, no doubt, but unless the industry awards really go off the rails, I expect Quan will win the Oscar easily.

Supporting Actress:

  • AWFJ: (TIE) Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin and Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • CACF: Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • DFCA: Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • GWNYFCA: Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • NCFCA: Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NSFC: Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • OFCC: Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • SDFCS: Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • UFCA: Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once

This category remains somewhat chaotic. Really glad to see Stephanie Hsu win a few, though Kerry Condon remains the frontrunner, in my view. Bassett and Curtis are also in the mix, though I fear we’ll get a repeat of what happened with Belfast last year, where the veteran gets nominated over the newcomer (though in that case I felt the veteran gave the better performance) when it seemed they would both get on.

Ensemble:

  • AWFJ: Women Talking
  • CACF: Glass Onion
  • DFCA: Women Talking
  • NCFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • OFCC: Glass Onion
  • SDFCS: Everything Everywhere All at Once

Just gotta see what SAG does. (Hopefully they make at least one chaotic choice.)

Screenplay (Original/Adapted):

  • AWFJ: The Banshees of Inisherin/Women Talking
  • CACF: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • DFCA: The Banshees of Inisherin/Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
  • GWNYFCA: The Banshees of Inisherin/Glass Onion
  • NCFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once/Women Talking
  • NSFC: Tár
  • OFCC: Everything Everywhere All at Once/Glass Onion
  • SDFCS: The Banshees of Inisherin/All Quiet on the Western Front
  • UFCA: The Banshees of Inisherin

I’m really starting to think Everything Everywhere will take Director and Banshees will take Original Screenplay, making it anyone’s guess as to who actually wins Picture until they actually announce it. As for Adapted, I don’t even know at this point. I thought Women Talking would take it easily, but that film has been underperforming in recent weeks (the BAFTA longlists snubbed all the actresses but included Ben Whishaw for Supporting Actor), so who the hell knows. I don’t even know when I’ll get to see it.

Cinematography:

  • AWFJ: (TIE) Top Gun: Maverick and The Woman King
  • CACF: Top Gun: Maverick
  • DFCA: Nope
  • GWNYFCA: Top Gun: Maverick
  • NCFCA: Nope
  • NSFC: EO
  • OFCC: Top Gun: Maverick
  • SDFCS: Babylon

Can’t wait to see EO. Really annoyed I missed the initial limited run on the other side of town. Also glad to see some wins for Nope, which was really well shot.

Editing:

  • AWFJ: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • DFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • GWNYFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • NCFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • SDFCS: Everything Everywhere All at Once

Another award Everything Everywhere should easily win (unless they toss it to Top Gun for some reason).

Production Design:

  • CACF: Babylon
  • DFCA: Babylon
  • NCFCA: Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • SDFCS: Babylon

Interesting call on North Carolina’s part (that film does have some interesting design), but Babylon will probably win this, and deserves to.

Costume Design:

  • CACF: Elvis
  • DFCA: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • NCFCA: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • SDFCS: Elvis

Can’t really argue with this – but also, Neptune Frost.

Makeup/Hairstyling:

  • CACF: The Whale
  • DFCA: The Batman
  • NCFCA: Elvis

Three groups, three different winners – and none of them are my choice. Oh, well.

Score:

  • CACF: The Batman
  • DFCA: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
  • GWNYFCA: The Batman
  • NCFCA: The Batman
  • OFCC: Babylon

Really wild that The Batman didn’t make the Oscar shortlist but Devotion and Don’t Worry Darling did.

Song:

  • CACF: “Hold My Hand,” Top Gun: Maverick
  • DFCA: “Naatu Naatu,” RRR
  • NCFCA: “Naatu Naatu,” RRR

Watch the Music branch snub “Naatu Naatu” for another Diane Warren song. (There is one, and it’s from a movie that isn’t even streaming anywhere.)

Sound:

  • DFCA: Nope
  • NCFCA: Nope
  • SDFCS: Top Gun: Maverick

Oh, and Nope didn’t make the Sound shortlist. So Top Gun is probably just winning this automatically.

Visual Effects:

  • CACF: Avatar: The Way of Water
  • DFCA: Avatar: The Way of Water
  • NCFCA: Avatar: The Way of Water
  • SDFCS: Avatar: The Way of Water

I bet Thirteen Lives wins the Oscar. I can feel it.

Stunts:

  • CACF: Top Gun: Maverick
  • NCFCA: RRR

Gotta go with North Carolina on this. Those fight scenes were incredible.

Also, I’m adding this category to my own awards for 2023. Not entirely sure how to evaluate it, but I’ll do my best.

International/Foreign Language Film:

  • AWFJ: (TIE) Decision to Leave and RRR
  • CACF: RRR
  • DFCA: Decision to Leave
  • GWNYFCA: Decision to Leave
  • NCFCA: RRR
  • NSFC: EO
  • OFCC: Decision to Leave
  • SDFCS: All Quiet on the Western Front

God, they better not snub Decision to Leave. It should be up for a lot more, but this is its best shot at a nod, and if they fuck it up, I’m gonna be grumpy.

Animated Film:

  • AWFJ: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
  • CACF: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
  • DFCA: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
  • GWNYFCA: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
  • NCFCA: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
  • OFCC: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
  • SDFCS: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

If they snub Pinocchio, it’s gonna look really bad. I don’t think they will – it’s not like The Lego Movie – but you can never rule it out.

Documentary Feature:

  • AWFJ: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
  • CACF: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
  • DFCA: Fire of Love
  • GWNYFCA: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
  • NCFCA: Fire of Love
  • NSFC: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
  • OFCC: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
  • SDFCS: Wildcat

And I don’t even know what major film will get snubbed this year. They always snub at least one. It’s their thing. I’ll take a stab at guessing closer to the 24th.

So that’s 41 more wins for Everything Everywhere, 20 more for Banshees…and I don’t think anything else reached double-digits. Damn Film Twitter, making the butt-plug movie into a Thing.
