My Top 10 Films of 2017

br_cc_7480r

As with my personal list of the bottom 10 films of the year, this list is solely determined by what happened to end up as the 10 highest-ranked films on my personal list. It wasn’t as if I started with a list of films I liked and had to pick 10 – this is just what fell into place over the course of the year.

I’ve decided to do something different this year and list my top 10 alphabetically rather than in ascending order of quality. First, because I don’t want to diminish the suspense regarding the outcome of my upcoming Film Awards, but second, because this is a very tight group of films, especially my top 5 (which you’ll discover soon enough). I could see several films ending up as my #1 of the year, given enough time and repeat viewings.

So I’ll do as King Arthur did (the actual King Arthur, not Charlie Hunnam and Guy Ritchie’s idea of Arthur) and invite these 10 films to sit at my table as equals. The point isn’t which one is the best – the point is that they’re all great.

The Films of 2017 in 150 Words or Less: Part I

slamma_jamma_xlg

“$7.50 an hour!” “But he has a million dollar heart!”

I’ve seen far fewer films this year than in previous years; tight finances are partially to blame, and a comparative lack of “must-see” films hasn’t helped. But for the most part, I’ve been pretty lucky with the films I have seen, and so I offer my thoughts on the 22 films I haven’t already reviewed…

I have already made my feelings about The Book of Henry very clear indeed.

My Six-Month Film Awards: 2017

2017 Six Month Best Picture

Time flies when you’re having fun, and even if I haven’t been having as much fun as I’d hoped – I’ve only seen 19 films for this year so far, compared with 35 this time last year – it’s still hard to believe it’s already time for this year’s Six-Month Awards.

Because I’ve seen so few films, I considered not doing them, but was persuaded to otherwise; partially for consistency’s sake (thank you, Maggie!), and partially because I love doing these posts. So let’s see what we’ve got!

Picture:

  1. A Quiet Passion
  2. Kedi
  3. Wonder Woman
  4. Baby Driver
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

My Most Anticipated Films of 2017 v. 1.0

A Janus Films release; a future Criterion Collection entry, perhaps? (Source)

As we work our way through the 2016 awards season and try to wrap up the last of that contentious year, it’s only right that we also look to the future. I can’t say if 2017 will go down as good year in film or not; less than two weeks into it I don’t even have the firmest grasp on what will come out.

But we have to start somewhere, and after some research I’ve compiled a list of 80 films which I’m anticipating – or, in some cases, dreading.

Please note that not all of my analyses are as thoughtful or in-depth as might be optimal. This is just a first casting of the net to see what awaits us. I’ll put out another rendition of this list later in the year, probably either after Cannes or right around when I do my Six-Month Awards.
