Afri-Cola Review

Normally I wouldn’t be consuming caffeine so late on a weekday. But I had a rough day today and felt like treating myself. Besides, I wanted to get around to this before it went flat, so why not kill two birds with one stone?

This is another one of my World Market acquisitions; the wholly unique shape of the bottle, the striking graphic design, and the general reliability of colas made it seem like a safe bet. So all the way from Germany, from the municipality of Bad Überkingen, it’s Afri-Cola!

Oh, and apparently this brand of cola is famous for being especially high in caffeine. So tonight should be fun. (This is what I do instead of drinking booze.)

Paulaner Spezi Review

Been a while since my last soda review, but as we’re moving into spring and the weather is growing warmer, it’s going to be prime soda-drinking time for a while.

Today’s soda is one I almost had before. It’s a German soda (produced in Munich), about which I know only that World Market carries it, that it boasts a fairly nifty looking can, and that, going by the on-can description of it as “Orangelimonade mit Cola”, it’s something like a citrus cola. Beyond that, I’m going in blind. Without further ado, from the Paulaner company, it’s Spezi!

Pepsi 1893 Review – All Four Flavors

Truth be told, I’m not a Pepsi man. I’m not even really a cola man; I prefer a good Pepper-style soda or ginger ale most of the time. And when it comes to the major colas, I frankly think Coca-Cola is superior.

But when Pepsi put out their “1893” line of experimental sodas, I was intrigued. I meant to try the first two flavors (Original and Ginger) some time ago, but that was around the time I cut back my soda intake significantly and I ended up never having any. But recently, noting the release of two additional flavors (Citrus and Black Currant), I resolved to try all four and write them up.

So here are the four members of the Pepsi 1893 roster. Let’s see if Pepsi bests Coke at branching out into the craft-soda market.

Original New York Seltzer Cola & Berry

I’ll proceed with caution regarding ONYS’ other flavors, but at least I know they have one flavor I can savor.

Here’s hoping I can track down Cola & Berry. That seems like their most interesting flavor.

So I said when reviewing ONYS’ Peach flavor. Imagine my delight when, a few months later, I happened upon several bottles of Cola & Berry in a World Market. I bought it and drank it promptly, recording my impressions as I did so. Apologies for not writing up my thoughts sooner, but I simply never got around to it.

The following review is as verbatim from my notes as possible, so I apologize if the review is a bit rough around the edges.

Crystal Pepsi Review

In 1992, Crystal Pepsi came onto the scene, and despite heavy promotion was gone by 1994, having taken its place alongside New Coke as a failed attempt at shaking up the entrenched American soda paradigm. However, just as Surge was brought back from the dead, so, to my surprise, has Crystal Pepsi been given a new lease on life.

You know I’ve got to give it a shot. I missed it the first time around (that I can remember). I’m not making that mistake again. I’ll be honest, I’m not a Pepsi fan – I’m definitely on the Coke side of the eternal cola dichotomy – but no matter.

Mr. Cola Review

I’ve tried Mr. Cola before at the instigation of my friend Kam, but never gave it a review. It’s been a while since I actually drank this bottle, so I’m going from memory and my notes, but no matter. From Orca Beverage Soda Co., originally born under the auspices of Grapette…Mr. Cola.

Fentimans Cherrytree Cola Review

wpid-imag1546.jpg

I had this once, several years ago, but as I faintly recall, it was enjoyable, and so why not make it my next subject? (I’d review Surge, but I’m not about to order a whole case of a soda I don’t even have any nostalgia for.) After all, it’s not every day you have a cherry cola with fermented ginger root extract in it.
