The Editor’s Guild announced their award nominations today.
Feature Film – Drama:
- Hacksaw Ridge
- Hell or High Water
- Manchester By the Sea
Not a great list. Arrival and Hell or High Water are solid, but Moonlight isn’t especially memorable editing-wise, Hacksaw drags when we’re not on the battlefield and Manchester becomes something of a mess in its second half.
No idea who wins this, actually.
Feature Film – Comedy:
- Hail, Caesar!
- The Jungle Book
- La La Land
- The Lobster
What’s great is that it deserves to be here, too. It’s quite a gracefully edited film. I’m sure it won’t win, but the fact that it’s here is really heartwarming.
Deadpool does a solid job of hopscotching back and forth in time. Hail, Caesar! is passable. The Jungle Book is fine. La La Land…eh. (I wasn’t a particular fan. It’ll win, though.)
Animated Feature Film:
- Kubo and the Two Strings
Finding Dory was robbed. The way they handled the flashbacks in that were incredible. Especially contrasted with the narrative issues which bring down Kubo.
- Amanda Knox
- The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years
- O.J.: Made in America
Oh, man. Choosing between O.J. and Weiner is tough. O.J. manages to hold your interest for eight hours and weaves together archival material and interviews extremely well. But Weiner takes what must have been a huge mass of fly-on-the-wall footage and manages to distill into a 96-minute film which is incredibly compelling and clear from start to finish. So it might be the greater achievement. But either would be a fine choice.
