J.C. Chandor’s drama set in crime-ridden 1981 New York looks to be a solid period piece and a worthy progression from Margin Call and All is Lost. It’s getting early Oscar buzz for Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, and I could imagine Chandor will get a second Screenplay nomination (he was nominated for Margin Call). I think it looks good, though I won’t say I’m totally dazzled yet.

There’s a lot of potential here. Tim Burton potentially returning to form (by reuniting with the writers of Ed Wood), and moving away from grotesque fantasy–while focusing on a different kind of grotesquerie. Amy Adams will be gunning for an Oscar with this, Christoph Waltz looks wonderfully slimy, and I’m really digging the score. So hopefully this pans out. I definitely liked the trailer more on the second viewing, which bodes well.

I’d been looking forward to this for quite some time, and now we get a real trailer. And I gotta say, it does look good. I’m concerned it might end up being more faux-Malick than its own beast, but I’ll be giving it a shot regardless.

From the line “That dog was a final gift from my dying wife”, I was sold. I’m always down for a good crazy action film, and this looks to be making good use of Keanu’s stone-faced persona to amp up the comedy. Add in what appears to be a healthy helping of ass-kicking and the presence of Ian McShane, and I’m just waiting for it to come out.

It’s Studio Ghibli. Their films are great by default–and I mean **** great. And here, they’re going with a simpler, storybookish style of animation, and that intrigues me (I love that shot of the moon). The score is gorgeous, the story is a classic Japanese fairy tale, and it has a customarily good voice cast (Chloe Grace Moretz, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Lucy Liu, Darren Criss)…how can I not be excited for this?

I only just heard about this film. It might turn out to be pretty thin. But it has good music and could have good spirit and good humor. Coming-of-age stories, especially ones like this, are a bit of a crap shoot. But it looks decent enough from what I see here.

Oh, fuck yeah. I have no idea when this is coming out (it’s apparently caught in some kind of release hell), but director Joe Carnahan has been releasing clips for a while now; I think there’s a trailer, but I chose this clip for obvious reasons. One dicey bit aside, I think this looks hysterical. “Has anyone ever referred to you as a punk-ass motherfucker?” Perfection. I really hope this gets an actual release. Over at Collider, you can see two other clips, featuring Chris Pine as some hysterically stoned…individual.

Seriously, I can’t wait to see this.

This, on the other hand, I’m concerned about. I haven’t laughed that much at the trailers to date (there are some good lines, but everything feels kind of low-balled), and I honestly had more issues with This is the End than most (especially the third act), so this could still be a great subversive dark comedy, or it could be kind of off-key and half-hearted. I really don’t know. At least Lizzy Caplan is getting good roles.

This won the Jury Prize at Cannes, and is now Sweden’s submission for Best Foreign Film. As a look at how an impulsive action, even an inconsequential one, can have profound ramifications, it seems to be pretty insightful (and is apparently quite funny is well–the bit with the remote-control helicopter especially). I’ve never seen a film by Ruben Östlund before, but hopefully, this will be the first.
