I’ve got three movie reviews to write (The Immigrant, Locke, and A Million Ways to Die in the West) that probably won’t start popping up until tomorrow, so in the meantime, here’s a soda review! A sarsaparilla, courtesy of the Kutztown Soda Works in Kutztown (duh), Pennsylvania.
I’ve never had sarsaparilla before, but I’ve heard it’s kind of a forerunner of root beer (they use common flavoring agents). Kind of the chimpanzee to root beer’s homo sapien.
It’s got that root beer smell, all right.
Tastes pretty much just like one. It’s nice, though. Pretty full-boded flavor.
Maybe, compared to your average root beer, it’s a touch less creamy and a hair sweeter. But you really have to look for it.
The copy on this bottle is ridiculous: “…always a sign of good luck and good taste anytime it’s enjoyed. Ach now, don’t that drink good?”
Yeah, it’s definitely less vanilla than most root beers. Not that different, taste-wise, but I’ve got to say something about this stuff.
The front of the bottle says “Nix besser“, that is, “None better”. Not quite.
It is refreshing. If you come across it, go for it.
Done. If you find it, by all means drink it, but don’t go out of your way unless you’re a root beer completist. Or Sam Elliott.
