Longlists to Nominees: Picture

Here it is. The big one. And yet, this could be the easiest category to do. Read on and see why.

  • Captain Phillips
  • Computer Chess
  • Frances Ha
  • From Up on Poppy Hill
  • Frozen
  • Her
  • Mud
  • Nebraska
  • Prisoners
  • Rush
  • Short Term 12
  • Side Effects
  • Spring Breakers
  • To the Wonder
  • A Touch of Sin
  • 12 Years a Slave
  • Upstream Color
  • The Wolf of Wall Street

This year, 10 films earned **** from me, and 8 of them are locks for Best Picture nominations:

  • Captain Phillips
  • Her
  • Nebraska
  • Spring Breakers
  • A Touch of Sin
  • 12 Years a Slave
  • Upstream Color
  • The Wolf of Wall Street

Those are on. The remaining two **** films–Side Effects and Rush–are both excellent films, but are they Best Picture nominees? I’m not so sure. Let’s to the longlist.

  • Computer Chess: Nope. Cool film, quite enjoyable–but I give it no other nominations. It doesn’t belong here.
  • Frances Ha: Nah. Maybe if I had nominated the script I’d consider it, but as it is, no.
  • From Up on Poppy Hill: If I’m going to nominate a Studio Ghibli film from this year, it’ll be The Wind Rises. This is a really nice little film, but it’s not that good.
  • Frozen: There’s just not enough meat on its bones. It’s a good film, but there’s just something lacking at the core of it.
  • Mud: If I’d nominated Tye Sheridan and/or the script, maybe. I could see this getting on at some future point, but in the moment, it doesn’t that extra something to make the grade.
  • Prisoners: I like it a lot. It’s got issues, and wouldn’t win, but I like it as a nominee, at least for the present. So I’m putting it on.
  • Rush: It just doesn’t have the additional nominations to justify it. Plus, great as it is, it’s great in the smooth, professional sense, not in the bold, ambitious sense. So I don’t feel strongly about it as a nominee.
  • Short Term 12: Initially I figured I would never nominate this, but once I put it on for Adapted Screenplay–knowing it would also get several acting nominations–I realized it makes sense as a nominee. It does a lot of things right, even if it falters at other times. So it’s on. It has the other nominations to support it.
  • Side Effects: A great, fun thriller, but kind of lightweight for this category. It’s the sort of film which looks like a good nominee in February.
  • To the Wonder: Highly underrated. Quite a beautiful film. But…not Best Picture material. This isn’t The Tree of Life.

And now, the 2013 honor roll:

  • Captain Phillips
  • Her
  • Nebraska
  • Prisoners
  • Short Term 12
  • Spring Breakers
  • A Touch of Sin
  • 12 Years a Slave
  • Upstream Color
  • The Wolf of Wall Street

Really didn’t expect to put Short Term 12 on. But it has 6 nominations, this included. It does make sense.
